March 9, 2014 Series: Strapped
Topic: Weekend Gathering Message
One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
What does the Bible say about debt?
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.
Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.
So how do we get out of debt?
Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.
1 Timothy 6:6-8
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.
Self-Disciplined Spending Principles:
1. Nothing is a good deal unless you can afford it.
2. You don’t save money by spending money.
3. Just because you can afford something doesn’t mean you should buy it.
4. Every purchase should be examined in light of its alternative uses or kingdom potential.
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
2 you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared by the words of your mouth.
3 So do this, my son, to free yourself,
since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands:
Go—to the point of exhaustion-
and give your neighbor no rest!
4 Allow no sleep to your eyes,
no slumber to your eyelids.
5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
Two Steps to Freedom:
4. Follow ____________.
2 Corinthians 8:9
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
1 Corinthians 7:23
You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings.
2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
