1 Corinthians 9:25-27
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
To be __________________, you can’t get there by ___________ but will get there by ________________.
1. Train ______________________.
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
2. Train _______________.
12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
2 Peter 1:3,5
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness… 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
3. Train _________________________.
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
1 Timothy 4:7
Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
How have you experienced success or failure through training or trying?
Why is it important to approach training from the perspective of having God’s favour already?
How have the spiritual disciplines been valuable for your own spiritual journey?
Father, thank you that I have your favour through Jesus and I can participate in the spiritual disciplines with confidence because of that. Thank you that you promise to draw near to me as I draw near to you.
