God Told Me: Discern
July 21, 2013 Series: Summer Salsa
Topic: Weekend Gathering Message Passage: John 10:27
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
How do I really know it’s God speaking?
How do I discern the voice of God?
There are Other Voices
The airwaves are not clear but congested.
a. The World
“2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
b. The Flesh
“16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”
c. The Adversary
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”
Discerning the Voice
Fortunately, we are not left on our own.
There are ways to determine the origin of the signal transmission.
a. The Bible – Does this align with God’s revealed word?
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
b. The Body – Is this affirmed by godly counsel?Matthew 18:19-20
19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
c. The Spirit – Is this affirmed by the still small voice of the Spirit as I have sought God?
“13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
d. The Mind – Am I thinking through the filter of a renewed mind? Am I seeing through the lens of a renewed mind?
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
