With Joy From Prison

Imagine being chained up and held prisoner in ancient Rome. You're a world away from those you care about. Guards are at the door, and you're chained to the floor with no chance of escape. What is more, you know that your imprisonment is only temporary, that soon you will be put on trial and possibly executed. You don't even have a social safety net, so you have to rely on others to bring you food and supplies. It's a hopeless, joyless, dead-end experience. The apostle Paul spent quite a bit of time in Roman prisons of various shapes and sizes. While he was in Rome, he wrote multiple letters to the churches that were under his leadership. One of the letters he wrote was to the church in Philippi, a people he loved a great deal. One of the fascinating things about the letter is the reappearance of the word JOY. I'm sure the irony isn't lost on us. Paul was stuck in one of the worst places imaginable and yet he was bursting with happiness. What was the secret to his joy, even while in prison? Journey with us as we live in this ancient text and allow the text to live in us.
